Coffee enemas are one form of hydrotherapy with a variety of health benefits. Hydrotherapy dates back to some of the earliest civilizations as a way to cleanse and heal the body.
Max Gerson, M.D. founder of the Gerson Institute, believed coffee enemas stimulate a complex enzyme system —where free-radicals are greatly diminished and carcinogens are combated.
In Gerson’s book, A Cancer Therapy- Results of 50 Cases, he developed a therapy program for many diseases with excellent results. His therapy combined coffee enemas with a special diet, including freshly juiced organic fruits and vegetables combined with oils and other supplements. The enemas were a cornerstone of the therapy.
Gerson found that the coffee enemas dilated the bile ducts, helping to purge toxins out of the body. He would give up to six coffee enemas a day for terminally ill cancer patients to help treat disease and even help provide and extreme detox from chemotherapy.
Though no one knows exactly how the coffee enemas work, it’s believed that they act as a dialysis of blood across the gut wall. Since all of the blood in the body passes through the liver every three minutes, the liver pulls toxins out of the blood during the process. Coffee enemas are not just for cancer patients. but for anyone looking to boost energy, improve health and increase digestion.

Coffee Enema Instructions
What you’ll need
- Enema bag or container. You can find a variety of enema bags on amazon.com. You can also use a 2-quart stainless steel enema bucket as well.
- Organic coffee. Buy any high-quality regular coffee, regular grind or flaked, non-instant and not decaffeinated, or grind your own coffee. Only organically grown coffee with no added flavors or additives is advised.
How to prepare the coffee enema
- Place 2 1/2 cups of purified water into a saucepan and bring to a boil.
- Take 2 tablespoons of coffee and place it in the boiling water (you can also use a coffee maker if preferred).
- Let it boil 5 minutes, then turn off the heat and allow it to cool. Wait until the water is slightly warmer than room temperature (think body temperature) that way the body will be more receptive to the enema without a the shock factor.
- Strain the liquid through a double fine strainer or coffee filter into a clean enema bag. Screw on the top of the enema bag.
- Your enema should be used immediately to keep the desired temperature.
Note: Make sure never to put boiling hot liquid in the enema container or in your body (ouch!)
Enema preparation
- Connect container hoses. Make sure they are securely fastened into the enema bag.
- Remove air from the bag. With the clamp on, but not closed, place the tip of the hose into the sink and allow the contents to flow out of the bag by holding the bag up in the air. As soon as a bit drips out of the tube, quickly close the clamp. This will take out any unwanted air from the enema tube.
- Lubricate. Place some high quality castor or sesame seed oil on the enema tube tip and on your bottom for an easier and more fluid process.
Performing the enema
- Lie down on your left side on a towel either on the bathroom or in the bathtub. You can also sit on the toilet, however this makes it a bit more difficult to hold in the coffee solution.
- Insert the tip slowly and gently in your rectum. This should not hurt. Move it around until the tub goes in about 6-8 inches.
- Hold or hang the enema bag slightly above you and release the clamp to allow the contents to flow into your body.
- If the coffee solution doesn’t flow immediately, you may need to hand or hold the enema higher in the air, otherwise you can squeeze the bag gently.
- If you feel crampy, you can close the clamp, turn from side to side and take a few deep breaths.
- When the bag is emptied, close the clamp and remove the tube slowly.
- It is recommended to retain the enema for approximately 15 minutes (or as long is comfortable for you). Some are able to hold the enema longer than others. If you feel the urge to have a bowel movement – don’t strain to hold it in. Listen to your body and it will know what to do. (massaging your abdomen is a great way to get the enema further into the colon).
- After about 15 minutes, sit on the toilet and let the enema contents flow out of you. Some of the water may be absorbed, and that’s okay (it probably means you’re just dehydrated).
Tips
- Be patient as practice makes perfect.
- Make sure the water is a comfortable temperature, Just about 98-101 degrees F.
- Prepare by keeping comfortable with a pillow and whatever you need to completely relax.
- Listen to your body and if anything doesn’t feel right, simply stop the process.
