Video: Can Soul Food Be Healthy?
Growing up African-American in the South, I always relished eating what I considered to be a cultural delicacy: soul food. It was savory, saucy, and reflected my heritage. But with all the fat and meat, it wasn't healthy. Due to their diet and lifestyle, most people in my community suffered from heart disease, hypertension, and diabetes. When I made the conscious choice to go vegan for health and spiritual reasons, I thought I'd never get to enjoy soul food again. On this episode of Soul of Green on Conscious Living TV, I found two of the best soul food restaurants in the country, both owned by African-American entrepreneurs who are putting the heart back into soul food - and their communities - without meat and dairy.
