“Eating foods that will center or calm your energy center is a great way to shift your energy from anxious and scared, to balanced and strong.”

Across the globe, there have been daily, near hourly, events and news updates about the COVID-19 pandemic. One constant: The world as we know it is changing quickly.

Foods that Support Our Energetic and Emotional Body

In my practice, I teach people that the energy and thoughts you put into your food can directly affect the energetic vibration of the food and how your body receives it. So, while you’re cooking, think about how the meal you are preparing will nourish you and your loved ones, keep you healthy, and keep your immune systems strong.

Being conscious of the foods that you are eating helps your body feel balanced and secure.

Eating foods that will center or calm your energy center shifts your energy from anxious and scared to balanced and strong. The first chakra, or the root chakra, guides this grounding, safe, and secure frequency, so eating foods that support this chakra will help you shift your thoughts and emotions.

Try to be mindful of eating too many foods that will stimulate anxious feelings, like caffeine, sugar, and processed foods. These foods might comfort your mind in the moment, but long term (or even within a few short hours), they can actually destabilize your vibration and weaken immune function.

As you eat these grounding foods, you can amplify their calming effects by practicing a mini meditation or repeating affirmations, out loud or in your mind, as you prepare the food and as you eat. Especially when you sit down to enjoy your meal, imagine being rooted into the earth from the bottom of your feet. Say to yourself, “I am safe, I am secure, I am healthy.”

Squash. Squash is a family of earthy-flavored fruits, or gourds, that comes in several varietals and are typically prepared as vegetables.  Especially when prepared with love, these plants will help your body and energetic field feel more stable and peaceful. Some of my favorite squash are butternut squash and spaghetti squash, which both taste delicious roasted with herbs and extra virgin olive oil. After roasting, butternut squash can easily be pureed with broth for a creamy, centering soup. Mushroom based sauces are a perfect addition to spaghetti squash for a soothing pasta-like meal.

Warm teas. Anything warm will help you feel more comfortable and secure. Taking in a warm beverage or food requires us to eat or drink more slowly, which can truly be a meditative process, if we choose to be present when doing so. Tea is a wonderful way to take in the benefits of some powerful adaptogenic and Ayurvedic herbs and roots such as ashwaghandha, tulsi (holy basil), elderflower, astragalus, chamomile, ginger, turmeric, lavender, passionflower, and lemon balm.

Grounding spices. Using certain spices in your foods can help you feel more balanced as well. Add dry spices like ginger, allspice, cardamom, cloves, turmeric, paprika, cinnamon, and coriander to your meals to give them a grounding effect. Add ginger to a cup of hot lemon water and try adding allspice to a bowl of butternut soup.

Red vegetables. Red is the guiding color of the root chakra, the energy center that rules your sense of safety and security. The root chakra connects to our adrenals and reproductive organs, our legs and feet, immune system and blood cells. Eating red vegetables can help to support and stabilize this chakra.

Soups and stews. Soups and stews are the ultimate food for feeling safe and secure. The preparation in making a warm healing soup or stew, is, in and of itself, a healing, cathartic process. Cutting up and prepping gives us an opportunity to add extra intention into each ingredient. The time it takes to cook down and simmer the soup or stew allows us to appreciate the transformation of a raw ingredient into a beautiful, nourishing meal. Use root vegetables and a mineral-rich broth to give your soup or stew the extra grounding properties to support you during uncertain times.

Mineral-rich foods. Plant-based fats like raw organic nuts, seeds, and avocados are rich in minerals, which are very supportive for your body, your mind, and your energy centers. Some of my favorite healthy nuts include walnuts, cashews, pistachios, and almonds.

Root vegetables. Any vegetable that is grown in the soil of the earth will carry with it a powerful, grounding vibrational frequency. Some examples of nutrient-dense, easily accessible root vegetables are potatoes, sweet potatoes, turnips, carrots, yams, yuca, radishes, parsnips, beets, and rutabagas. I love to chop up several different root vegetables and roast them in the oven with some extra virgin olive oil, Himalayan salt, and freshly cracked pepper. This is a simple and delicious way to nourish and ground.
