Some Favorites from 2019

S&H Editor Ben Nussbaum shares his favorite stories from 2019.

My personal S&H journey started in northern Wisconsin in the summer of 2018. While visiting family, I received my first email about potentially working with the magazine. I skipped some of the boating and swimming to start studying what made S&H so effective.

By the time I officially joined the team, it was spring. From my attic office in Northern Virginia, I watched a maple tree slowly go from purple buds to green leaves. Now at the end of the year, I'm in New Mexico: Cholla cactuses and friendly road runners are outside the window.

The desert is a great place for calm reflection. In that spirit, I've looked back on 2019 and chosen some of my personal favorites:

During the summer, Julie Peters write a five-part series on mindful sexuality. What a joy to read her take on a topic that, even today, is too often ignored.

I took delight in many of Kevin Anderson's contributions, which are full of I-never-thought-of-it-that-way moments. If I had to pick a favorite, it would be his answer to the question of what to do when spouses end up on different spiritual paths.

A personal highlight was adding Rabbi Rami, longtime print contributor and podcast host extraordinaire, to our roster of digital writers. His perspective is always insightful and entertaining. (Example: What does science fiction tell us about the future of religion?)

In print, a favorite piece was To Zen and Back (subscriber login required), a beautifully written story of one person's spiritual journey. I loved Dawna Markova's take on grandmothering (subscriber login required)—and too many other stories to list.
