9 Fall Health Remedies from Ayurveda

Which foods are best for your dosha at this time of year? Read on to find out.

Wherever your location and local weather, a change in seasons is a time to proceed with caution. Watch your state of health and your needs carefully because they’ll likely be changing just as the temperatures fluctuate.

The following nine remedies for your Ayurvedic body type may be beneficial during this time. In truth, though, these remedies can also be used at any time of year. The trick is to choose your foods wisely.

Vata Dosha: Remedies To Keep Digestion Running Smoothly

Vata dosha may be compromised in fall with symptoms like dryness, loss of sleep, constipation, and sensitivity to cold.

  • Sour lemons are beneficial for constipation and abdominal pain. They help clean up the body of undigested food matter and strengthen digestive power.
  • Squeeze lemon into herbal teas or hot water. They’re also great for flavoring light dinners of chicken, rice, and vegetables. 
  • Use grapes to kindle the metabolic power, or agni. Grapes are natural laxatives and help keep the digestive cycle moving along properly. Enjoy a handful of grapes a half hour before a meal to promote hunger as well as downward movement in the gastrointestinal tract.
  • Keep a regular daily routine of waking, eating, and sleeping. With regularity, digestion happens on a schedule and the body’s tissues develop properly. According to Ayurveda, the body rebuilds itself cyclically so the body’s strength is actually built up over time with regularity as a key component.

Pitta Dosha: Remedies To Cool You Down

Even as the weather shifts, you may continue to carry aggravated summertime Pitta in your system.

  • Coconut water is beneficial if you’re prone to becoming hot or heated. It has a cooling action on the body and also cleanses the bladder.
  • Melon is strengthening and cleanses the alimentary tract. It has a cold effect on the body, so it’s great to help cool down an overheated system. Enjoy melon alone. It’s too heavy to digest well with other foods.
  • Bitter greens have a natural cooling effect due to their bitter taste. They’re great for hot Pitta dosha and also heavy Kapha dosha as the bitter taste counteracts both. Enjoy bitter greens cooked with only a small amount of salt.

Kapha Dosha: Remedies To Lose Extra Weight

As the weather becomes cooler, it’s natural to eat a larger quantity of food with heavier meals. Keep Kapha dosha healthy with these simple remedies. Most importantly, avoid overeating.

  • Green tea is naturally bitter and a perfect drink for relieving Kapha. The morning hours are the Kapha time of day when density and heaviness are still thick in the air. Avoid cold morning caffeine and cream which clogs the system. Choose green tea to keep Kapha light and moving along.
  • Black pepper stimulates appetite and digestion. It’s a great decongestant and expectorant. It helps break up phlegm and warms the body up. Sprinkle it into soups and stews or enjoy as a tea with ginger.
  • Morning is the best time to exercise, to loosen, burn, and sweat out Kapha.
