My Spiritual Director

I bring my spiritual director my latest crises and dilemmas, and we work them through, always with an eye to where the Divine is.

This article appeared in the Winter 2001 issue of Spirituality & Health. I had been meditating at lunchtime in the cool dark of St. Francis Xavier, a big old church near my office, and called there to ask whether they offered spiritual direction. I was careful to explain to Sister Honora that I was not Catholic, wasn't even a Christian, but had come by my spirituality through my 12-step work with Overeaters Anonymous and Food Addicts Anonymous. "Not an issue," she told me. She would link me with Kathy Duffy, pastoral associate. Three years later: It’s noon on a drizzly April Wednesday and Kathy is right on time, waiting outside my office building on New York City’s Lexington Avenue. A big hug, and we set off through the midtown throngs toward the nearby Hyatt Regency hotel, whose lobby we’ve used for the last two years for our regular chats. As we dodge traffic, she tells me she saw Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Jesus Christ Superstar last night, and we link arms and break into a line of Mary Magdalene’s, “I don’t know how to love him,” right there on 42nd Street. This, my instinct tells me, is who I am …
