Welcome to the Great (Interfaith) Swamp!

Making interfaith dialogue a priority: the "other" is our neighbor, our co-worker, our boss, maybe our spouse. Love it or not, each of us is being pushed into more constant and increasingly complex interactions with people of vastly different beliefs and ways of knowing. And, as we know from brain science, it is through such interactions that we create ourselves.

This article appeared in the Summer 2000 issue of Spirituality & Health. Place yourself for the moment in a swamp. Dense forest. Bog. Blackish, brackish water. You’re on dry ground. Well sort of. Chances are your shoes are wet, your legs spattered. And if you’re moving much at all, you know that at some points the only thing between you and the ooze are quick hops across matted grass. Stop to think and you may sink. You ask yourself, “What am I doing here?” Answer: Getting bogged in a metaphor, of course. No worries. We have places to go and people to meet. First stop: Morris County, New Jersey. Why Morris County? Because New Jersey is our nation’s most densely populated state, and Morris is our nation’s fourth wealthiest county. Savvy people from all over the world have chosen to congregate here. And we’ll go because the water runoff of ten townships of the county feed a great swamp. The Great Swamp. “But. But.
