Joy: by Peggy La Cerra

Joy, as Rabbi Rami tells us, is cultivated when we broaden our awareness and psychologically situate ourselves within a larger worldview. When we do this, we are taken out of the energetic calculus of our individual life. Keep in mind that our mind-brain is actually ‘negatively biased’ – it places more weight on the negative outcomes of our behavior than positive ones. This serves an adaptive function -- it helps to keep us alive -- but it’s not the most pleasant state to live in. When we broaden our awareness, our mind-brain’s energetic tally naturally tends to be more positive than we’re focused on our own life and it’s problems.
