Aikido's Early Years

Sixty years ago this March, the martial art of aikido was introduced to the United States, via Hawaii, by Koichi Tohei, then a top instructor in Japan. Eight years later, Tohei returned to the islands, this time accompanied by his master and aikido’s founder, Morihei Ueshiba, and a delegation of students and instructors. These photos from the archives of Maui Ki-Aikido document their 1961 visit, and the early days of Aikido in the west.
